Sitting here fixing machine's for my relatives, like a good boy I am. Done the wifi, now on to rebuilding their XP machines. Unfortunately a bit of bloatware I uninstalled took out the DVD drive (go figure). Thankfully rather than manually fixing the registry Microsoft have released a tool to automagically do it.

Should do the trick.

I think somehow Hewlett Packard either wanted to make installing Windows XP hard on dv2700 series laptop's or they just wanted to see how good us geeks actually are.

Well, I think we passed.

The Drivers & Specs for the dv2742se & dv2700 series are:

Slipstreaming XP + SP2 I got working with nLite that comes with it's own boot image so you don't need IsoBuster. It'll also slipstream the SATA drivers into it, building an ISO file it'll also burn to CD.

The Bluetooth driver's were difficult, every package I could find was corrupt, but I found a post here that pointed to a new package here in the Czech Republic that worked.

With all these problems, and the need to have the homegrown server running something stable I've decided on Debian Stable for the re-install. I'll be doing this with backports as that way I can at least grab the latest releases without damaging the core stable system; as it'll be sitting in colo I really don't want to drive down there every weekend to kick it back into gear.

Debian can be grabbed from here, note most people have never needed anything but the first dvd or first one or two cd iso's for a basic install so no need to grab everything.

Backports are available here, this at least gives the ability to keep up to date with more specific packages while not damaging the core system.

Fingers crossed this should be the final time I do a rebuild before it goes to colo.

[update]

server running a lot better, since I made the switch to Debian; won't be long now till it's taken down to colo.
