Imperial War Museum

Wanted to get the HP back in play so put Ubuntu 9.04 on it to try it out.

Replaced the drive with an OCZ SSD drive, certainly is quick, boots in 5 seconds.

Anyway what can I tell you;

  • There's now a nice windows-esque full screen installer, with the ubuntu ibex wallpaper in the backgroud
  • mousepad double-tap is disabled by default, YES!
  • You've got the latest software, obviously
  • There's new packages like firmware-utils, usbutils, also noticed some nvidia and ati packages installing there in the background.
  • The wifi support looks much more competent
  • With VLC, the display speed does seem a lot quicker and there's no annoying DVD stutter from the get-go

The kernel is 2.6.28-8 at time of writing, and thru the installer it gives you better options to encrypt your home drive.

Stability on my Alpha 4 version is more or less rock-solid, I wouldn't run a server on it but it should do just fine for my homework laptop. VLC did just crash with some dvd menu's, but then it's never been too happy with those.

Think i'll be sticking with this one, will update as the experience progresses, but so far thumbs up dev-team and all the supporters; definitely an xp killer.

...just updated with aptitude, 413 new packages ;-)

Annoyed...

The Fog

Well Michelle just showed me something E4 are doing and either someone's pooling off my brain or I really have premonition ;-)

Last year I thought up a great story about a couple who have this place out in the woods, they soon get set upon by a group of psychologically un-hinged teenager's. They eventually hold up in the bedroom while the attackers run amock thru the bungalow trying to lure them out into harms way. The husband takes a look outside the window and notices one of them just standing there looking back at them lifelessly, next moment they're gone. A couple of months later I see a film called The Strangers, good movie, just a little uncanny.

Round two, I have an idea about a family getting ready for the morning run. They're in their flat rushing around to take the kids to school, the wife is in the bathroom fussing with makeup, the husband is in the kitchen half watching tv (that weirdly is only showing the test signal) while eating breakfast. They get out to the car, drive thru town and start to wonder where everyone else has gone, the place is deserted. Then out of the corner of their eye they spot a dark figure just standing there in the middle of the road not moving zombie-like. Really spooky, right?, well apparently Channel 4 are doing something around those lines with a programme called Dead Set.

Well trust me the latest idea I have for a good book I'm keeping to myself, Michelle agree's with me, it's a little on the scary side.

Take care thru Halloween and remember,

Finally got a working install of Eclipse 3.4 on Ubuntu Hardy 64-bit, here's how...

sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jdk

Now update your bashrc file,

nano ~/.bashrc

...adding this line at the end,

export JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/

Then download Eclipse 3.4

wget http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/eclipse/technology/epp/downloads/release/ganymede/R/eclipse-java-ganymede-linux-gtk.tar.gz
tar xzvf eclipse-java-ganymede-linux-gtk.tar.gz
mv eclipse eclipse3.4

And start with...

eclipse3.4/eclipse

Thanks goes to jhcore.com for this one

Update

This didn't work for me but it might help someone in different circumstances, will keep hacking at it; eventually it'll work.

On a totally non-technical note, Doctor Who ended it's current run with Rose finally getting a Doctor of her own.

Unfortunately they cut the ending we wanted to see, but thankfully a fan managed to put it together; think this one's better,

Courtesy of my Michelle, she loves a good ending ;-)

GTA4

If you're like me, everytime you play GTA for a bit you just can't help trying your luck at making the police's life a misery. It's bad I know, you're driving down a road, 30% into a mission, bored and then just go 'damn it' and slam right into a police car and whizz away at 200mph with 5 cops in tow.

It's such a rush and one of the cornerstones of the GTA series that make it so enjoyable, the freeform model allowing you to try things you'd never do in real-life and re-live moments like the Bullitt car chase or Popeye Doyle's dash thru the streets of San Francisco; and with the enhanced gameplay and more realistic effects this is going to be one game you just won't be able to put down.

Roll on April 29th, I personally can't wait!
